6 Holidays and Their History, Part 1

When you are looking for something to celebrate but no special occasions are immediately forthcoming, you might want to take advantage of the nearest holidays. Not all countries offer days off on some holidays but it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate them. The following list of holidays and their history can help you come up with a great party theme.

  1. The Queen’s Birthday

June is a wonderful month for birthday celebrations. If you weren’t born in June, you can celebrate the Queen’s birthday. Depending on the country, the queen’s b-day is celebrated on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Saturday in June. If there is a king in your country instead of a queen, you can celebrate his birthday as well.

If there is no king or queen in your country, you can celebrate any queen’s b-day you wish, for example, Queen Elizabeth’s II. Remember, the real birthday of the monarch doesn’t have to be in June. The Saturdays in June are created to celebrate the occasion even if it was back in January.

  1. Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras or Pancake Tuesday used to be celebrated long before the New World was conquered by the Europeans. Ancient Romans celebrated Lupercalia in the middle of February. It used to be a festival with circus performances, which is somewhat similar to the modern Mardi Gras.

After Romans accepted Christianity, some of the holidays were incorporated into the faith, including the Mardi Gras. Even though it’s a religious Catholic holidays, it’s often celebrated by everyone. The holiday lasts for the whole month, the peak of it being any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. It means that you have a great occasion to celebrate in February.
